Motion to Prevent a Premature Policy on Discrimination

Subject: Motion vis-a-vis the Policy on the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment
Dear Vice-President of Governance, Diane Davidson,
Please add the following motion to the Agenda of Monday, June 6, 2011, meeting of the University of Ottawa Senate:
WHEREAS the University of Ottawa, Canada’s University, is committed to providing a campus environment that is free of discrimination and equitable to all.
WHEREAS the Student federation of the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Equity and Human Rights (CEHR) and the Student Appeal Centre (SAC) continue to receive complaints of discrimination on our campus.
WHEREAS the CEHR and the SAC have expressed grave concerns in the present draft Policy on the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment and the inadequacy of its consultation process.
THEREFORE the Senate recommends that the proposed Policy on the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment not be adopted at this time, and;
THEREFORE the Senate recommends that the consultation process be reconvened with the goal of implementing an exemplary Policy on the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment.
