VP Resources Selection: Student pressure forces an election

August 11, 2011

As reported (here) on July 29, 2011, President Allan Rock stated to all Members of Senate that the Senate’s representatives to the Selection Committee of the University’s new Vice-President, Resources would be chosen by the Executive Committee of the Senate instead of by the full Senate, as properly the case.

I publicly opposed Mr. Rock’s move to circumvent the Senate’s democratic process to elect its own representatives in an e-mail  (here) copied to all Members of Senate as well as concerned community members and the media.

I ended my e-mail by saying: “I will do everything in my power to ensure that my rights as a senator are respected by your administration in this matter. Please reconsider your position immediately and inform me by Thursday (August 4).”

I didn’t receive a response.

Today, however, the administration reversed its position and informed all Members of Senate that the representatives to the VP Resources Selection Committee will indeed be chosen at the September 12, 2011 meeting of the full Senate.  But apparently Mr. Rock’s change of heart had nothing to do with my e-mail?

From: Office of the Vice-President Governance
To: Members of Senate
Date: August 11, 2011
Subject: Elections to the Selection Committee of the Vice-President, Resources

TO MEMBERS OF THE SENATE

Good day,

Please note that due to the absence of many senators during the summer period and in order to ensure that all senators are given the opportunity to submit their candidacy to the Selection Committee of the Vice-President, Resources, the call for nominations is extended until Friday September 2, 2011. The election will be held during the September 12, 2011 meeting of the Senate.

Best regards,

Annie Garant
